Stratospheric ozone, found in the upper atmosphere (which begins about 5 miles above Earth's surface), forms a protective layer that helps block ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun.Too much UV exposure can lead to vision loss and skin cancers. But according to Paul Wennberg, Caltech's R. Stanton Avery Professor of Atmospheric Chemistry and Environmental Science and Engineering, and his colleagues, it is possible that a significant source of methane, at least in the Los Angeles basin, is fugitive emissions—leaks—from the natural-gas supply line. We recently sat down with Caltech's Paul Wennberg to talk about methane emissions and how to put the Aliso Canyon event into perspective.

I’ve recently worked on quantifying sources of errors in measurements of column averaged CO2 (XCO2) and other gases by low (0.5 cm-1) resolution solar-viewing spectrometers ( EM27/SUN ) [1] . Paul Wennberg Credit: Michelle Feynman for Caltech Methane and ethane—two of the major components of natural gas—are measured above the Caltech campus using a remote sensing instrument that utilizes the historic solar telescope located on the roof of Caltech's Linde+Robinson laboratory. Wennberg, an atmospheric chemist and environmental geochemist, studies the influence of human activity on the global atmosphere. We talked with Wennberg by Zoom to get his take on what we can learn by observing COVID-19's impact on air pollution, and why we are not seeing the same dramatic effects in the Los Angeles area that have been observed elsewhere in the world. But the issue of improved air quality is not as simple as the photos may suggest, says Caltech's Paul Wennberg, the R. Stanton Avery Professor of Atmospheric Chemistry and Environmental Science and Engineering.
